Then I found out from Google that it may not be one because it flies with its neck retracted (cranes fly with their neck outstretched). And that, ladies and gentlemen, makes it a heron. Now, the closest I am to ever becoming an ornithologist is to study the bones of any bird that unfortunately made its way to my dinner plate but this one looks very much like a Chinese Egret or Swinhoe's Egret or Egretta eulophotes.
Bird watching to start the year and I'm feeling so smart already. Hah!
