PENNY LANE
- The Beatles -

Little Jen could barely speak when she started coming to our house.

She and my sister first only shared giggles between the wire fence that separates our houses. Very quickly, she became a regular visitor to our home.

I used to love listening to them talk to each other. A duck and chicken lost in translation. One in Chinese, the other in Malay. But they got along like they've been best friends forever.

I was away most of the time while she continues growing up. But I still see her over the holidays and she still brings along her homework whenever she drops by. By then, she'll always be the one entrusted to look after our home when the family is away on holidays.

My sister has since left Miri to further her studies, but little Jen keeps coming back, sometimes to keep me company, other times just to talk about mysterious barkings around the neighbourhood or the snobbish boy at school.

One day, she'll move on too.

RED BLOODED WOMAN
- Kylie Minogue -

There are 2 places in the car that I hate the most.

Left front passenger and middle rear passenger seats.

Arguably in case I'm involved in an accident and the front vehicle has something jutting out and pierce my neck or I'm the easiest one to be thrown out of the front of the car (especially in the case of being seated in the middle).

I can never close my eyes during a journey unless I feel perfectly safe or I'm truly knocked out.

Why do I have a feeling I've said this before?

CASUALTY
- Missy Higgins -

A random personality test revealed that I'm best suited for either one of these professions: -

- Psychologist, human resource professional, social worker, librarian, editor / art director or fashion designer
- Interior / landscape designer, chef, fashion designer, legal professional, counselor, travel agent or customer service
- Writer, counselor, editor, art director, therapist or career counselor
- Customer service, credit counselor, legal assistant, librarian, dietitian, property manager or physician.

Multiple hits on designer, councelor, editor, even librarian and customer service (?!) But to no surprise - no engineer.

My numerous inklings and tendencies throughout my whole life is proved even further.

KAYAK FOR ONE
- Hans Zimmer -

My dear,

What I said yesterday, there's more.

Adjusting to a new environment, you catch a glimpse of the behaviour you'll be facing in your day-to-day life. Maybe that's how they really are, maybe it's just small talk.

But it doesn't mean that it's right.

How they make assumptions, how they discriminate, how they are just being ignorant, unaware (or fully aware) they might hurt others.

Eventually the mask will have to come off. But always keep your head high, chin up. You are who you are, be proud of it. You've got better things to do, maybe they actually accept you, maybe they don't.

You know better.

I do sometimes wonder if I actually contradict myself in saying all that, maybe sometimes slightly hypocritical. Things gotta change. I should try not to get involved or caught in such conversations.

LOOKING AT THE WORLD FROM THE BOTTOM OF A WELL
- Mike Doughty -

....pasta improviso....

1. Go check what you have in the kitchen.

2. Be greatful you have at least something closely edible.

3. Put together whatever you found from the fridge or the shelf.

4. Think quick.

5. Cut 'em tomatoes, mushrooms, tofu. Crush black peppercorns, chop garlic. Prepare spaghetti until al dente.

6. Stir fry all other ingredients. A dollop of olive oil left, thank goodness. Need to include in shopping list.

7. Throw in pasta. Add a pinch of salt, some dry basil.

8. Voila! Bring in front tv, and indulge.

I love being lazy to go out sometimes.

KOZMIC BLUES
- Janis Joplin -

This is one of 'em days I wish so much that I own a reliable camera phone.

In front of me was an old, beat-up Mercedez. What caught my attention was the third brake light at the back.

See what you can make of this: aluminium foil, a house bulb, tape, red reflector strip.

Creativity to the extreme.

And it works! Although I think the strip needs a bit more tape.

Now you know what I want for my next birthday, even better, make it this Christmas. Could come in handy snapping a picture of that car with the wooden spoiler.

BOTH SIDES, NOW
- Joni Mitchell -

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As ev'ry fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

JUST GIVE IT TIME
- Jon McLaughlin -

I signed my papers with the bank today. Every month from now on, quite a substantial amount from my salary will be used for good purpose, I'm happy with it.

I sighed a sigh of relief.

Now just to sit back, relax and more dinners at home.

BACK TO THE GROUND

- Jamie Cullum -

It's a no go for Bali this year because our flights were cancelled. But that's ok, there's always a next time.

The thing that irks me so much is how bad this airline handles it's customer services.

I'm beginning to wonder how is it possible that the ground crew are so unlike the air crew. 'Langit dan bumi' we say it, pun intended. I have no major complaint so far (touch wood) of the pilots, the cabin crew.

As for the customer service hotline, it's just impossible to reach, for one. 30 minutes later when you do get to speak to one of their staff, she's just so inept, rude and couldn't care less. Maybe she had a hard day but it comes with the job, but it's the industry she's in, and sometimes it is hard, but it applies to everybody else too. So what if I had a bad day as well? My, my what disaster that would have been, especially when the conversation was supposedly recorded 'to help improve services'. Sorry mate, time to switch gears.

Anyways, enough of that. So at the end of the (3 minute) conversation, instead of feeling better about the whole thing, knowing that we'll definitely get our money back, we're asked to give them another call! Politely asking if there is any other number or contact person we can refer to, I swear I could hear her eyes role, "We have only this hotline number".

Err....I wanted someting more specific but honey, even if you're not that enthusiastic about your sucky job, at least don't try to lie because you suck in it as well.

I dialled 2 hotline numbers just trying to get to the sucky you!

PASAJERO
- Gipsy Kings -

Another lovely KK trip.

A ride on the wooden train which can easily be at least 50 years old.

And breakfast at the waterfront.

As for white water rafting, Gopeng beats Sg Padas but at least I can strike this out of my list.
